Summer Term Roald Dahl....... What makes a story magical?

Summer Term 2016

Our theme is based around Roald Dahl stories (James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and George's Marvelous Medicine. Our novel study will be The Twits. During this we will be looking in more detail at the book, including finding words that relate to our learning in SPaG - compound words, plurals, er, est, ing, ed suffix words, speech marks, commas, apostrophes, amazing adjectives. We will also be learning more about Roald Dahl, his life and what inspired him to write stories.

Our essential key question is ........ What makes a story magical?

We have started the theme off with a poetry day. Our poem for the poetry slam was "Quack!" said the Billy Goat. We have continued to study this poem as we thought that it was a good link to the farm animals that Mr Kranky owns, and that maybe the medicine that George brewed up made the animals make other sounds!! This will lead us into studying George's Marvelous Medicine where we will be concocting our own disgusting recipes.

We will then be looking at James and thee Giant Peach, character and setting descriptions (using a thesaurus - for amazing alternative adjectives and dictionary - to spell words correctly), story mapping to then be able to write our own narratives.

After the half term we will be studying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will be writing sweet poems and a persuasive advert.

In maths we will be focusing on number bonds to 20, counting forwards and backwards to 100, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
