Year 1M

Welcome to Y1M!

Our teachers are Mrs McCambridge and Mrs Bramall

This term we are learning all about The Magical World of Roald Dahl.

We will be working towards answering our key question which is

'What makes a story magical?'

Our theme is based around Roald Dahl stories (James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and George’s Marvellous Medicine.

Out novel study will be on Fantastic Mr Fox. During Novel Study we will also be learning all about who Roald Dahl is and what made him want to write so many fantastic stories.

We started the theme off by writing instructions. Firstly, Mrs McCambridge gave us the instructions on how to make a delicious strawberry and banana smoothie. We followed these instructions and tried the smoothie! It was YUMMY! Then we went on to make our own instructins for revolting medicine just like the one in George’s Marvellous Medicine.

This Half Term Mr Webb (a teaching student from Sheffield Hallam) will be helping us with our learning. He will be planning lots of exciting activities to do in Literacy, Math and Theme Sessions.

In Maths we are having a big focus on Number Bonds to 20 as well as counting backwards from any given number (1 – 100). We will also be solving word problems involving Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. We aim to become Maths Masters this term.

In Literacy we will be writing instructions, character and setting descriptions, a story and a mini beast fact file.

In SPaG we will mainly be focusing on spelling and rules we need to follow to help us spell words. We will also be focusing on alternative pronunciation/spellings of the phonic sounds we know. This will help us with our Phonics Screen which starts on the wk beginning 13th June.

Finally we are having a huge push on spellings this half term. The children need to be able to spell all the Days of the Week, all the numbers up to 20 (in words) and also a list of 100 high frequency words by the time they move up to Year 2!

We are well on our way but could do with a little more practice at home. There is 30 Dojos for anyone that can prove they have been practicing at home and starts to apply these in their work everyday.

The 100 High Frequency Words are listed below in the Planning, Spellings and Newsletter section.
