This term our space topic began with a huge spaceship crash!!! We were fascinated when we found lots of slime around the classroom and even finding actual baby aliens in the outdoor area! Year 2 did not know what to do with the baby aliens... until we received a letter from Mummy Alien (check the letter out in our gallery).
After reading the letter, we used our science lessons to discover which material would be better to wrap around the alien and keep it the coldest. We then learnt the difference between natural and man-made objects, which then helped us collect the right natural material from the woods in order to make the alien den (check out our photos in the gallery).
Sadly, after looking after the baby aliens it was time to say goodbye. We placed the aliens in our ‘natural materials’ den and went back to our classroom. But SUDDENLY we heard someone shout ‘LOOK!’.....and there in the distance was Daddy alien coming to collect his babies. (Have a look at our photos to see if you can spot Daddy alien in the distance)
During our space topic we also celebrated the famous astronaut Neil Armstong’s life (as he sadly passed away only last year). He was the first person to walk on the moon!!!! We tried to become Neil Armstrong and think about how he would have felt just before he blasted off in his rocket. We explored different musical instruments to try and find the right sound effect to match his emotions (can you guess by looking at the photos how the year 2’s thought Neil was feeling when he blasted off?)
In our Literacy lesson, we learnt how to write a discussion text which was about whether children should look after aliens or not. We had to look at both sides of the discussion and understand both points of view in order for us to be UNBIASED in our writing. In maths we began to look at word problems and all the different words used in these problems to find out what calculation we needed to use such as: LESS THAN/ MORE THAN/ GROUPS OF/HOW MANY MORE.../ WHAT IS THE SUM OF...
We also learnt about the different planets:
DID YOU KNOW THAT WE USED TO HAVE 9 PLANETS BUT NOW WE HAVE 8 BECAUSE PLUTO IS NOW KNOWN AS A DWARF PLANET?
To help us remember the planets and their order from the sun we learnt a little poem:
